AIS Automatic Identification System:

AIS (Automatic Identification System) was originally designed to help ships avoid collisions and help port authorities to a better control traffic at sea. The AIS transponders on vessels include a GPS (Global Positioning System ) that collects position and movement. It also includes a VHF transceiver, which periodically transmits this information on two VHF channels (frequencies 161.975 MHz and 162.025 MHz - old VHF channels 87 and 88) and makes these data available to vessels on the area and to the monitoring stations on shore. The other vessels or base stations are able to receive this information using special software and they can display the locations of ships on a plotter or a computer. All vessels over 40 meters or 400 tons must be equipped with an AIS transponder.
StarNavPilot allows the decoding and display of information received by an AIS receiver. The receiver (AIS transponder, AIS receiver, VHF with included AIS receiver...) must be connected to the PC via a serial port (or USB with an adapter). The detection of the AIS receiver is automatic.

Better to change course

The A.I.S. radar:

The A.I.S. radar of StarNavPilot

The A.I.S. type radar display provides a clear view of the vessels in the VHF range area. It allows you to display the projection of the position of the each boat up to 10 minutes using the course and speed of each vesel. This provides a clear vision of the evolution of the situation and risks of collision. A decision to change course or speed will be taken based on this projection and the effect of change of course or speed can be immediately evaluated. It is possible to start an animation of the projection of the situation for 6 minutes ahead. This animation allows rapid assessment of risk of collision. The animation can be viewed once or loop. The radar has a function of eccentricity. The range is adjustable from 0.1 to 10 miles per circle. The icon size is adjustable. The hovering of a A.I.S. target by the cursor display data of the ship. Clicking on a A.I.S. target provides access to the detailed vessel characteristics. See an overview of the operating principle.
