Automatic Identification System (AIS) is an
automated message communication system between vessels by VHF radio (in the VHF
range) which allows vessels and traffic monitoring organizations (CROSS) to know
the position, course, the status and identity of vessels in a navigation area.
Chapter V of the SOLAS Convention requires all ships over 300 tons
gross tonnage to be fitted with this device.
The AIS system
represents a real progress for safety at sea to the point that most boats
carrying out offshore navigation are equipped even if they are not covered by
chapter V of the SOLAS Convention like pleasure craft .
