Any digital nautical chart comes from a document intended to be printed on paper. Most of the available digital nautical charts have been created directly from a paper copy of the original chart. StarNavPilot allows you to easily scan your own charts yourself or use the services offered by most of today's digital print worker. The operation is simple, fast and requires no special skills.

1st step digitization of charts:

By digital printing:

Nowadays all digital printing shops or copy-shops have an A0 scanner allowing to scan the whole of a nautical chart in a single pass and to obtain a perfect document (optimal definition 300DPI). The cost of the operation is only a few euros. You will then have 2 charts for practically the price of one: the digital chart on the computer and the paper chart which you can use in case of problems. The computer being the most fragile device on board, it is dangerous to have its cartography only in the computer.

Price comparison :

1 digital SHOM chart 36 Euros

1 SHOM paper chart 25 euros + scan ~ 5 euros = 31 Euros

For 5 euros less you have the 2 charts.

Using a digital camera:

Necessary material :

1 good quality digital camera (16 Mega Pixels or more recommended)
Place the chart on the ground in a well-lit room. Hold the camera straight and vertically from the center at a height to frame the useful part of the map. It is sometimes better to move the camera a little further and use the zoom to do the framing, a wide angle lens may cause more distortion.

center at a height to frame the useful part of the map.

2 nd step: Load the chart in StarNavPilot.

Loading a nautical chart into the computer

Load the file in your computer then open it in StarNavPilot with the command Load a scan or a raster chart.

3 rd step: Correction of a possible inclination of the document.

Correction of a possible inclination of the
document

Despite all the attention you may have paid to shooting or scanning, the chart is likely to tilt a little. The first thing to do is therefore to straighten the chart which is done in 2 clicks with the corresponding function of StarNavPilot.

4th step: Georeferencing.

Georeferencing consists of providing the geographical coordinates of at
least 2 points located on the chart and as far apart as possible in the vertical
and horizontal directions

Georeferencing consists of providing the geographical coordinates of at least 2 points located on the chart and as far apart as possible in the vertical and horizontal directions. You will therefore choose a point located in the top left corner of the chart (N.O.) and a point located in the bottom right corner (S.E.). On a nautical chart the simplest way is to use the crossings of the parallels and the meridians but you can also choose points located on the graduated borders of the chart.

Digital chart control:
At this stage the chart is georeferenced and if the capture was made with a scanner or a good camera, it can be used as it is. Check by moving the mouse over the surface of the chart whether the positions of the parallels and meridians are correct over the entire area of the chart. If you notice errors you will have to apply corrections to this chart. This is generally the case with captures from a camera due to optical defects in current lenses or a slight inclination when shooting.

5th step: Application of georeferencing corrections.

n a nautical chart it is very easy to apply a
correction grid since it suffices to create a correction point at each
intersection of parallel and meridian

This step is not useful if the document comes from a scanner.
On a nautical chart it is very easy to apply a correction grid. Just create a correction point at each intersection of parallel and meridian. These corrections are very easy to enter since it simply involves rounding the coordinates of the points. For example if you read W004°10'06" and N47°19'48" at the intersection of the meridian 4°10'and the parallel 47°20' round the coordinates of this point to W004°10' and N47°20'.

The chart is ready:

This chart is now operational. After having checked by moving the mouse over the surface of the chart that the positions of the parallels and meridians are correct on the entire area of the chart, lock the georeferencing of this chart to avoid any accidental change.

Benefits:
Your charts are independent of any proprietary format. You can save them, reinstall them as often as necessary on all your computers. You can update them either using a graphic editor or by adding a vector layer to this chart thanks to the advanced functions of StarNavPilot.

IMPORTANT: save your digital charts.

StarNavPilot has a chart export function. You can export all or part of your charts to mobile media or even CDRoms or DVDs. The CD-ROM or a DVD of charts has an import utility at its root for installing charts independently with the possibility of selecting the charts to install. In case of problem, you will be able to reinstall your charts on your computer or even on another computer if you use several computers on your boat or if you have created your charts with an other computer than that the one you use on your boat.
