Any digital nautical
chart comes from a document intended to be printed on paper. Most of the
available digital nautical charts have been created directly from a paper copy
of the original chart. StarNavPilot allows you to easily scan your own charts
yourself or use the services offered by most of today's digital print worker.
The operation is simple, fast and requires no special
step digitization of charts:
By digital printing:
all digital printing shops or copy-shops have an A0 scanner allowing to scan the
whole of a nautical chart in a single pass and to obtain a perfect document
(optimal definition 300DPI). The cost of the operation is only a few euros. You
will then have 2 charts for practically the price of one: the digital chart on
the computer and the paper chart which you can use in case of problems. The
computer being the most fragile device on board, it is dangerous to have its
cartography only in the computer.

consists of providing the geographical coordinates of at least 2 points located
on the chart and as far apart as possible in the vertical and horizontal
directions. You will therefore choose a point located in the top left corner of
the chart (N.O.) and a point located in the bottom right corner (S.E.). On a
nautical chart the simplest way is to use the crossings of the parallels and the
meridians but you can also choose points located on the graduated borders of the
Digital chart control:
At this stage the chart
is georeferenced and if the capture was made with a scanner or a good camera, it
can be used as it is. Check by moving the mouse over the surface of the chart
whether the positions of the parallels and meridians are correct over the entire
area of the chart. If you notice errors you will have to apply corrections
to this chart. This is generally the case with captures from a camera due to
optical defects in current lenses or a slight inclination when

step is not useful if the document comes from a scanner.
On a nautical chart
it is very easy to apply a correction grid. Just create a correction point at
each intersection of parallel and meridian. These corrections are very easy to
enter since it simply involves rounding the coordinates of the points. For
example if you read W004°10'06" and N47°19'48" at the intersection of the
meridian 4°10'and the parallel 47°20' round the coordinates of this point to
W004°10' and N47°20'.

by moving the mouse over the surface of the chart that the positions of the
parallels and meridians are correct on the entire area of the chart, lock
