What is the host?

What is the host?

When your computer connects to a server, it is actually connecting to an IP address. For more convenience you do not enter the IP address of a server in your internet browser but a domain name which is in fact a kind of shortcut to this IP address. Your computer will then consult a DNS server (Domain Name Server) which will give it the IP address corresponding to this domain name. But before consulting the DNS server, Windows (like all other operating systems) will consult a file called Host to see if there is not a specific instruction concerning this domain name and in particular a redirection IP address . It is therefore at the Host level that we will redirect all the domain names that you want to block to an empty address. 2 empty addresses are generally used 0.0.0.0 which means no access and 127.0.0.1 called localhost which is the address of your own computer.
